Our story

Welcome to Il Nido

il nido is Italian for “the nest”. A place to arrive and stay a while.

Since 2019 the former stable in the centre of Filisur has been a restaurant. Architect Theres Projer saved it from decay and converted it with a feel for old buildings: warm timber, an inviting open fireplace and a generous room that still feels sheltered.

Enjoy freshly prepared dishes and a varied kitchen in a relaxed setting.

Whether it's a long lunch, an evening with friends or a special group occasion, we want you to feel at home.

The house

An old stable in the village centre

Where animals were once kept, a meeting place was to emerge. The renovation took a year and historic elements were left visible. The room was first planned as a rehearsal space for the village band, which is why it still has unusually good acoustics.

The name

Where birds once nested

Birds used to nest in a hollow of the old wall. The wall was kept, and it gave the restaurant its name.

Theres Projer

Owner & architect

Theres Projer is an architect by passion and the founder of Il Nido.

In December 2015 the historic Chesa Cuminanza building was badly damaged by a devastating fire. With great dedication she rebuilt and restored the house and turned the adjoining former barn into a welcoming place where people meet.

From the start, her vision went far beyond saving an old building. She wanted to create a space where people come together, celebrate, talk with one another and feel completely at home.

«With this concept I hope to bring people a little closer together again»

Das zweite Leben eines alten Stalls

Architect Theres Projer turned an old stable in Filisur into a distinctive restaurant called «Il Nido». (German-language article)

Theres Projer

The article tells how Theres Projer saved the stable in the village centre from decay. The room was first planned as a rehearsal space for the village band, so the year-long renovation paid special attention to acoustics. When that plan fell through, a professional kitchen was added and the restaurant was born. Il Nido has been open since 2019, at first only in winter. For years the kitchen was run by Bernhard «Beni» Grob, former head chef at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz.

Was vom «Il Nido» in Erinnerung bleibt: Der zum aparten Restaurant umgestaltete alte Stall imponiert.

In her own words, Theres Projer tells how, after a fire in her house, the old barn became a place where people meet.

In December 2015, the left side of my house, which I had carefully restored in 2012, burned out completely. The right side, which I had bought three months earlier, was badly damaged. I admired and loved this house, because it bore witness to the building skill of our ancestors, who created wonderful, beautiful details without machines or computers.

It brought many difficulties and financial consequences, but I took on the task with great passion. Filisur got back a landmark of earlier times, and the old barn, which was built onto the house and had been very poorly maintained, was turned into a meeting place.

I often tried to turn back the clock and asked myself what this fire meant and why the beautiful old features had been destroyed. After much reflection and some quiet, it became clear to me. For as long as I have been in Filisur, I remember there always being conflict in this house, including the ten years it has been mine. The reason was the fragmentation of the rooms and the sale of small plots and individual parts of the house. So I reunited seven plots, divided the house up cleanly again, created a shared garden with a fire pit, and turned the stable into a space for celebrations, meetings, events, exhibitions or simply being together.

With this concept I hope to bring people a little closer again, so that they spend time together, celebrate, talk, and put prejudices and disagreements behind them.

With a great deal of commitment I have tried to create a good, warm and cosy atmosphere, and I hope the people of the village will make lively use of this space.
